‘Brothers fight’: Oilers’ Corey Perry speaks on bench argument with Evander Kane

The Edmonton Oilers won a very important game on Saturday against the Calgary Flames to move within three points of the Pacific Division lead, but the talk of the game wasn’t Leon Draisaitl’s 40th goal or Connor McDavid’s 99th assist.

What caught most people’s attention was the spat between forwards Evander Kane and Corey Perry on the bench, just after the two had taken a shift in the second period.

Two days later, though, it seems like it’s all water under the bridge.

“Brothers fight, it’s just trying to bring out the best in everybody,” Perry told reporters following Oilers practice on Monday. “It’s not uncommon. You come in here, you probably see a little bit more, but the cameras caught it and we moved on. We talked about it, apologized and that’s it.

“That’s what makes a team work, that’s how you win. You hold everybody accountable, you push everybody’s buttons. You do whatever you have to do to get the best out of everybody.”

Kane went even further, revealing that the two are partners in the Oilers’ Masters pool.

The Oilers have been rolling lately, steadily trucking along and challenging the Vancouver Canucks for the Pacific Division title — a far cry from the 30th-place standing they had on American Thanksgiving.

Whether it’s coming from the top line or the bottom six, Edmonton will need to keep that intensity as it prepares to make its fifth consecutive post-season appearance.
